COUNTY EXECUTIVE ATTENDS
NEW YORK STATE ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES
1999 ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE

Oneida County Executive Ralph J. Eannace, Jr. will be attending the 1999 New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) Legislative Conference today and Tuesday. Recently Eannace was elected to the NYSAC Board of Directors. Eannace has been picked by NYSAC to head-up three important events associated with this years conference.

At 1:30PM Monday Eannace will be co-hosting a special round table discussion with Madison County to discuss the Oneida Indian Land Claim. Nine additional counties will be attending this session to review possible joint and uniformed efforts. The counties will work on a proposed resolution to the Department of Justice and The Department of the Interior requesting assistance in the immediate removal of the land owners from the Oneida Indian Land Claim suit. Eannace stated, "bringing all the counties together in our fight for the land owners will serve to strengthen our position, that all homeowners must be immediately withdrawn from this litigation."

Eannace will be moderating a discussion on the Tobacco Settlement and its effects on New York, on Monday at 3:30PM. In November, a coalition of state attorneys general reached a $206 billion’s settlement with the nation’s tobacco companies. New York will receive approximately $25 billion to reimburse taxpayers for past medical costs associated with treating smoking-related illness. Approximately one half of these funds will be distributed to county governments, who share in the costs of Medicaid. Eannace said, "this program will focus on this historic settlement and its public health impact on counties."

Finally, on Tuesday, March 2nd at 1:00PM, Eannace will join Erie County Executive Dennis T. Gorshi, representing NYSAC in testimony before the Assembly Local Government Committee in the Legislative office building. Eannace and Gorshi will discuss the impact the proposed NYS budget will have on the counties.
