| Oneida County Executive Ralph Eannace, Jr. and Chairman of the Madison County Board of
Supervisors Larry Carpenter organized a statewide meeting on Monday aimed at galvanizing a
coalition of counties to develop a unified front in their efforts to defend New York
States property owners against Indian Land Claims. The group effort was conducted at the
1999 New York States Association of Counties Legislative Conference, held in Albany. Eannace said, "This is a tremendous opportunity to work together as communities. As we forge together a unified response against the attack by the Oneida Indians, the United States Justice Department and the U.S. Department of the Interior on the innocent landowners of Oneida and Madison Counties." The counties agreed to work on joint and uniformed efforts under the auspices of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) to form a state wide land claims committee. The purpose of the committee is to organize a collective effort aimed at protecting the rights of the landowners of all the counties, and to influence State and Federal actions. In attendance were Franklin, Cayuga, Seneca, Ononadaga, Sullivan, Erie and several other counties not currently involved in land claims. Carpenter said, "It is important for not only Madison and Oneida County, but also for Central New York and the entirety of New York State. The counties involved in the land claim are all addressing similar issues. It is important that we work cooperatively to encourage the State of New York and the United States Government to settle the land claim in order to protect our citizens." The attending counties agreed to continue to refine their approach with the United States and New York State and to galvanize the United States Congressional Delegation. The group concluded with the attendees united in their affirmation that the Federal Government must take immediate action to protect the rights of all New York State homeowners involved in Indian Land Claims. |
