Albany, New York Ralph J. Eannace Jr., Oneida County Executive met today with representatives of the State Senate and Assembly and county officials from across the State. The purpose was to discuss pending land claims and prospective issues with the hope of understanding and developing common goals. In 1999, the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) established at the request of Oneida County, an Ad hoc Indian Land Claim Committee, chaired by Ralph J. Eannace, Jr. Committee members are county officials representing over 16 counties that are currently confronting Indian related issues or are under a land claim or pending possible claims. Eannace said, "Indian land claim negotiations are of increasing importance across the State and absolutely require consideration of several issues on a statewide basis. We are already working closely with Governor Pataki and he has been extremely helpful throughout land claim negotiations and other related Indian issues. The purpose of our meeting today was to better understand each others respective situation, compile and share technical and legal findings and otherwise look for meaningful opportunities to bring about an appropriate resolution to a difficult and emotional situation." Eannace further said, " We are mindful that these Land Claims are not isolated, and that each court decision or settlement will have serious implications for future land claims in New York State." NYSAC Executive Director Robert R. Gregory noted, "The NYSAC Ad Hoc Indian Land Claim Committee has been able to bring together county officials with diverse Indian related issues and act as the statewide clearinghouse. I applaud the Governor for his continued leadership and commitment to the county officials and taxpayers."
